![]() Customize the sound of the exhaust and boost performance in your LLY/LBZ with a Performance Exhaust System paired with a Cold Air Intake. For extra horsepower and torque check out Chips, Modules, and Programmers. If you want to boost performance or maintain factory function in your GM Silverado/Sierra 2500HD/3500HD XDP has what you need. To this day the LBZ Duramax engine is still highly sought after, so factory and aftermarket parts are readily available. The diesel market was starting to favor automatic transmissions, so 2007 was the last year a Duramax diesel engine was available with a manual transmission. To handle that power this engine was paired with either the all-new Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission or the heavy-duty ZF650 6-speed manual transmission. In 2006, a stock 6.6L Duramax LLY/LBZ was rated at 310 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque, by 2007 that jumped to 360 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. The combination of new mechanical components and an upgraded ECM made the 2006-2007 Duramax LLY/LBZ the most reliable, durable, and powerful Duramax up to that point. The Garret VVT was also revised to improve overall performance. A larger turbocharger inlet manifold was added to help lower intake and exhaust temperatures while improving responsiveness from the Garrett GT3788VA variable-vane turbocharger (VVT). The Bosch solenoid-style fuel injectors were updated to a 7-hole nozzle that sprayed fuel directly onto the new fast-heat glow plugs when cold to provide faster start up. ![]() The reliable Bosch CP3 injection pump would still be used with an improved rail pressure of 26,000 PSI. ![]() One of the main components to the increase in power was upgrades to the common-rail fuel system. The forged steel connecting rods were also reinforced to handle the increased horsepower and torque. The cast-aluminum pistons were revised to lower the compression ratio. The internals of the 6.6L Duramax were enhanced to provide additional durability. For the ’11 model year, a detuned version of this engine with 260 hp and 525 lb-ft of torque, called the LGH and mated to the 6L90 automatic, was added to the powertrain options for the Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans. The solid foundation of a deep-skirt cast-iron block and cast-aluminum heads were carried over from the previous Duramax. This exhaust brake has different modes of operation when the truck is in Tow/Haul mode or when the cruise control is activated. The LML also added a “smart” exhaust brake built into the turbo, which is activated by the driver using a button on the center console. ![]() The new engine design also came with a B20 rating, allowing owners to use fuel blends with up to 20 percent biodiesel content without voiding their warranty or risking damage to the engine or fuel system. This was accomplished with the use of multiple new features, including super-fast-reacting piezo-controlled injectors (which are capable of multiple injections per cycle for optimal combustion), a ninth injector mounted downstream from the turbo to help DPF regeneration, a new EGR system with a cooler bypass, and a new selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system with urea injection. Once again, engineers were able to squeeze out another 105 lb-ft of torque while making the engine run dramatically cleaner than the previous generation. 2010 to Present – The current version of the Duramax, known as the LML, brings to market a massive 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque and meets the most stringent emissions laws to date.
